We carried onto the volcano passing a hydro power station and stopped to check out the waters of the Rio Laja. We passed through the Ranger station and entered the National Park and commence to drive up the rough road of the Volcano Antuco. It appeared that this rock road was newly made after an eruption and the area was devoid of fauna with power polls almost covered in volcanic material and others at various angles with broken wires and hanging. It appeared you that we could see where the previous road went by the power polls marking the route.

On the way up the volcano two German hitchhikers hailed us. They were concerned about getting out of the park before nightfall as it was about 600 pm and getting very cold. So they piled into the back of the Helmuts ute and we preceded up the steep winding rough road. The ladies were becoming concerned as we travelled due to the remoteness of the location and the sun setting.

The volcano lava dammed the river creating Laguna del Laja. The black lava was piled all around us as we picked our way past the rocks and mounds of lava. We drove along side the lake for some distance and with the ladies becoming more concerned, so we stopped in an open area to take in the vista and take photographs.

Laguna del Laja

Well we had made it to the Lake with the Volcano above us.

This was not a landscape it was a moonscape.

Forbidding black rocks for miles it was an awesome sight. Hope the wagon will not break down.

Looking back to the lake we could see the telegraph poles wires hanging limply down.

This was about as remote as you could get with Argentina just over the hill.

Well after seeing all there was to see we turned back with the cold becoming bitter. The boys on the back of the Ute must have been freezing and by the time they got off 3 hours later. The photographs do not do justice to this area because the light was so marginal.
