Uruguay has a chequered past in dealing with human rights and the Spanish in Uruguay had some difficulty in subduing the indigenous Indians the Charrua who had panache for killing Europeans. After the Spanish had established themselves as rulers they decided to kill every Indian in the country leaving Uruguay as the only South American country without an indigenous people. It’s hard to imaging people killing a whole race of people. In fact we had trouble getting our heads around it.

Montevideo population 1.3 million is known as South Americas most laid back Capital. It has a very picturesque historic centre. We stayed at the Holiday Inn that was handy to everything. On arrival we walked to the town plaza that was surrounded by beautiful old buildings. The people here are known for their friendliness and they keep their town clean. The whole place was a buzz as this was the election weekend and people treat this like a festival. Cars were careering around the streets horns blaring and people hanging out of windows waving flags of their political party and calling out to anyone who is in earshot with loud speakers. During election weekend no one is allowed to sell alcohol.

The following day we did a city tour with stops at “Outlet Stores” so Rhondda was there buying stuff for those back home. I bought a leather jacket.

Parliament house.

One of the many beautiful houses in Montivedio.

We also went to the local markets, which were amazing with so much paraphernalia on sale from the “Graf Spee”and other stuff from the past. The markets were huge even by South American standards and very intriguing.

This bronze sculptor was one of many and fantastic.

Uruguay is like all South American countries with very rich and very poor people. The contrasts are clearly visible in their buildings, cars and the work some people do. In the following pictures show the Portuguese architecture that is clearly different to that of the Spanish architecture.

A local park.

Stunning City.
