This is another illustration of the sea floor that has risen. The limestone has been washed away by weather leaving pinnacles of harder soil and stone. This is the first cactus we have seen on the decent. We were told that the cactus will not grow above 2800 meters above sea level.

This photograph is not doing justice to the area. The hills behind are vivid in colour. What is amazing is that this area is so arid yet the people who live here can turn it into this. Now the mountains in this area are called Cerro De 7 Colores.

The market in the town of Purmamarca 2200 meters above sea level.

Sunday another early start in our specially ordered people mover to Humahuaca (3000 meters above sea level). This route is where the Incas retreated from Bolivia and Peru chased by the Spanish to a place called Tilcara where the Incas made their last stand. This area of the Andes has amazing colours and the photos do not do justice to the area. We visited the markets and town centres along the route and walked through an Inca village. The capital of this area Jujuy was a pleasant town even though it is one of the poorest areas in Argentina. The local Boss, President or whatever and his family had been in power for many years and had recently been arrested for corruption. At the end of the day we flew back to Bueno Aries.

Pinacles of lime stone on the route Quebrada De Humahuaca.

Maimara the last stand of the Incas. Driven from Peru and Bolivia by the Spanish the Incas retreated over the Andes to this hill where they built this fortification and homes. Then the Spanish came and wiped the Incas out, everyone including babies. 2400 meters above sea level so the cactus grow prolifically.

This is a bell stone used for communication over distances. It gives a bong when hit by a rock.

In the town of Maimara was an excellent museum where this Inca mummy was just sitting around. Rhondda decided to check it out and found that when some Incas died they placed the preserved body into the gown above the mummy and kept the dead person in their homes. Its kinda strange to be hanging around forever.

We carried onto Tilcara where Rhondda and Antonio went on a buying quest. One of the more colourful buildings in town was this one where these suspicious characters were caught walking by.

Humahuaca was a larger town and we stoped here for some local food and check out the markets. The town was like the food, different. We were entertained by the local boy band.

The day was windy and dust clouds screen the vivid colours of blue pink grey and green of the hills.
