3 August Saturday

Early start with only 400ks to travel on a two lane sealed road to the town of Kasane and the Chobe NP. This park is on a river and on arrival we went for a game drive and saw the usual bunch of animals including the sable deer we had not seen before with big horns but no cats, grrrrr!

This park had the most numerous Hippos, Giraffes and Elephants we had seen as well as crocodiles. We were not too impressed when the driver of the boat woke up a bunch of hippos sleeping but the bank of the river by moving very close to them so they felt threatened and got up and moved quickly into the water.

4 August Sunday

We left early to get to the border of Botswana and Zimbabwe and on arrival at the border post the queues of trucks were for miles and we are told it takes days for them to get through however we sailed up to the post passing the miles of trucks and our guide had us through in around an hour.

From there we drove directly to the Victoria Falls National park where we commenced a tour of the park. The falls are 1700 metres wide and at the highest point 108 metres high and fall into the cataract 110 metres wide. It is one of the “seven wonders of the world” and awesome.

Incredibly we could see these guys fishing in a traditional way one slip and they would be over the falls.

The day was hot and walking the way back from the falls we came across a person collapsed on the ground needing first aid with two others caring for him. We offered assistance but they asked us to get help. Tony ran the way back to the Ranger station and asked for help but there was no first aid staff around so had to tell them to get a wheel chair and led them back to the person who appeared to be suffering heat exhaustion.

We then had a coffee and went to our hotel, very salubrious it was however there had been some hitch with the booking because Nomad tours normally only stay here one night due to the cost but our guide sorted it and we are here for three nights.

That night we had dinner with all our tour buddies as all except us we going home or elsewhere including our guides.

5 August Monday

Today we had a relaxing day starting with the German family of Dad, Mum and 4 daughters ranging from 26 to 16 years of age doing a flying tandem swing across the gorge. Was great fun to watch them and scary for their Mum.

After that we went to town for some shopping that was scary for Tony. Tonight we are out to Mama Africa for dinner and then to a pub where the backpackers all go and really pumps.

Well the night really was a flop as Mama Africa had bad food it was rubbish so they missed on a tip. The service was so slack that we did not get out until just prior going home. Had a quick look at the “Shoe string Bar” in was neat but we could not stay.

6 August Tuesday

Today we had breakfast with the Germans swapped pictures and listened to the younger girls relate a funny story. This Hotel is set in a National Park with allsorts of wild animals around. The girls opened their ranch slider doors and a baboon came into their room and grabbed some lollies they attempted to chased him out and he then did a poo on their bed and threw it at one of the girls hitting her directly on the forehead. We had a great laugh with her over that but things did not stop there.

We went back to our room opened our ranch slider and stepped out to enjoy the view of the park down to the Falls and heard a ladies voice crying out this sound OOOOoooh….. OOOOooooh…..OOOOooooh …… that continued for ages well we had no idea what was going on it that hotel room. “Yeah right”!!!!!!!.

Currently we are in our room with baboons all around us so Rhondda went out to take a photo when bang a big baboon dropped off the deck above landing directly behind her. These are pictures from our glass door.

We are now preparing for the next three weeks in Central and Eastern Africa where the roads are rough and the infrastructure is weak so we are not expecting email contact and we will be staying inside a number of Parks where there is little or no communication with the outside world.

Oh well time to pack the bags.
