The floor of the crater is 550 feet deep 4000 eet across and 2.4 miles in circumference, There is evidence of the crater being referenced by Native Americans in the area but the first written report was not made until 1871by a man named Franklin who served as a scout for General Custer, for years it was referred to as Franklins hole.
